Birth Asphyxia Brain Injury: The Babi Study

Chief Investigators: CIs Wallace, Fahey, et al.

Funding: Bill & Melinda Gates US$100,000; Perpetual Trustees. $101,540.

Aim: To develop a melatonin skin patch for the prevention of birth asphyxial brain injury, a leading cause of CP.

Update: We have visited India and BABI: An educational package for birth attendants in low resource settings has been piloted and submitted for publication. Patents are currently being explored for melatonin delivery systems.

New knowledge: Our educational package for birth attendants in low resource settings helps to identify asphyxiated infants. We are moving towards human trials of melatonin for birth asphyxia in high and low resource settings.
