Blood biomarkers of brain injury following hypoxia-ischaemia in the neonate

Significance: Hypoxia-ischaemia (HI) is a serious birth complication resulting in significant long-term health problems for affected babies and their families. The ability to rapidly determine the extent of brain injury in the seriously ill neonate is a significant clinical challenge worldwide. This project will define biomarkers in blood that correlate with brain outcomes. This will be a major advancement in the detection of brain injury in the HI-affected neonate that can be translated to clinical studies for accurate identification of the baby at risk of brain injury after birth.
