Consumer and community involvement in research is about the active involvement of consumers, community members and researchers working together to make decisions about health research priorities, policy and practice. It is an active partnership that is sensitive to changing needs and priorities. It is about being part of the process as well as observing or commenting. Fundamentally, it is a commitment to conducting research that is with the community rather than to or for the community. This approach results in greater transparency, openness and accountability and research that is more relevant to the community.
